About the Design – Falu Red Houses
Multiholk Red Cottage's design draws inspiration from the iconic Swedish Falu red summerhouse. For the past several hundred years, houses and farms in Sweden have been painted with 'Falu rödfärg' (Falu red color). The inspiration came from red-bricked, copper-roofed castles in southern Europe. However, as the materials were expensive, the style was imitated by painting roofs and cladding in Falu red. Soon the color became a status symbol.
Since Falu red is a finite resource, it is estimated that with the same consumption rate, the pigment will be depleted within 80 years. Consequently, export is limited. Our birdhouse is painted using an imitation Falu red color.
 
Cottage Birdhouse for Small Wild Birds
We develop our Multiholks in collaboration with ornithological experts, ensuring key adaptations that help the wild birds thrive are part of the core design. As a nest, the Multiholk's construction suits birds no larger than sparrows and tits. Climbing notches underneath the exit hole ensure the fledglings can exit to test their wings. Ventilation holes keep the wooden bird box cool on warm summer days.
Always position birdhouses no less than 150 cm above ground level to ensure the birds' safety.
 
Feed Birds the Right Way
What makes a good bird feeder? Good hygiene is vital when feeding birds. Diseases can readily spread between birds on open platform feeders, as the birds' droppings contaminate the food. To ensure the health of the birds that use our feeders, we design all our feeders to prevent the birds from sitting directly in the food. Their designs also protect the food from the elements, keeping it fresh for longer.
Want to give the small birds a chance to eat in peace? The Multiholk allows you to adjust the length of the perches so that only the smallest birds can take a pew. Simply push the perches further into the sides of the house to change their size.
N.B.: To extend the lifespan of your Multiholk and to keep its bird visitors healthy, we recommend that you thoroughly clean your birdhouse at least twice a year. Wash your Multiholk with warm soapy water. Always wear gloves when handling used wildlife feeders/nests.
